Russian scientists created a source of infrared radiation that works in open space

The source developed at the FORC consists of optical fibers containing bismuth ions. «Such a source can emit waves at previously unavailable parts of the infrared spectrum and opens up new practical opportunities for a wide range of various areas of science and technology. Its main application is associated with use under extreme conditions, namely long-term exposure to radioactive radiation and low temperatures close to those of open space,» it is noted in the message.
